THE ART OF KARATE DO

Hello I am Felicity...Nyx gave me this page to talk about Karate. I started Karate in England when I was 8 years old.
This is a picture of me I when I was 10 years old and the first time I fought in a tournament in New Zealand...... A literal translation of the three Japanese characters Karate - Do, is "way of empty hand". Another interpretation of Te is art or skill. As it was transmitted from China, Kara was sometimes written T' ang so that often it was called China Hand or China Art. Originally one of the basic martial arts,Karate was developed as a means of combat, using all parts of the body for this purpose. Karate techniques consist of guarding, blocking, striking, punching, kicking, joint twisting , and throwing.

Since Karate blows or kicks or so powerful, there was no safe way for students to test their skills against one another. The strength of the properly executed kicking and striking techniques is often shown by exhibitions of board or brick breaking. Within recent years a change has taken place in practice methods, enabling students to compete safely under official rules and regulations. By using skill and self-control, the contestants stop each attach within half an inch of contact. Because of the perfect balance, proper distance, and timing required of the student, this sporting aspect has rapidly grown in popularity.

Karate is an excellent method of physical exercise and discipline, because it makes use of almost all of the body's muscles in a way that develops both strength and agility.

.......Kata.

Kata, the formal patters that are the backbone of Karate training, develops form, style, balance, speed, and control. As with all other Karate practices, Kata trains the individual in " Zanshin":(alertness in mind and body). Kata consist of a series of defensive and offensive techniques against multiple imaginary opponents. The person performing Kata must always be aware of what each and every movement means. While Kata may look like a formal ritual dance with set forms, it differs in that the person doing a kata is always aware of what his imaginary opponents might be doing and should be prepared for the unexpected attack.

The aim of Karate is not perfection of physical techniques, but development of a mental attitude in the proponents of the art- to develop a mind that is tranquil yet flowing, fearlessly, with no hesitation, to whatever the situation may be.
